Dr Shaxx Mowlaboccus
Dr Shakeel (Shaxx) Mowlaboccus is a Lecturer in Medical Microbiology at Murdoch University and leads the AMR Genomics Research Group. He completed his PhD at The University of Western Australia in 2018, where he applied whole-genome sequencing to characterise a large collection of Neisseria meningitidis and assess the predicted coverage of recombinant vaccines against invasive meningococcal disease.
In 2019, Shaxx joined the Australian Group on Antimicrobial Resistance (AGAR) and established the bioinformatics pipeline currently used for the genomic analyses of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Enterococcus faecium as part of the national AMR surveillance program on bacteraemia. He also serves as the curator of multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) profiles for E. faecium and E. faecalis.
In 2023, Shaxx was awarded the prestigious ASM Jim Pittard Early Career Award by the Australian Society for Microbiology. He has also served as the International Young Ambassador of Australia at the American Society for Microbiology (2023-2025) and currently serves as the Chair of the Australian Society for Microbiology (Western Australia Branch). In 2025, Shaxx joined the Australian Society for Antimicrobials (ASA) as an executive committee member.
